Roberts Bakery prepares to enter administration

Roberts Bakery described the move as a “difficult decision“, which followed a “comprehensive review of the company’s product portfolio, overall footprint and long-term business strategy”.

Roberts Bakery has confirmed it has published a Notice of Intention (NOI) to appoint administrators.

The baker said that it is actively engaged with potential partners and funders about the future of the business, and that the NOI will provide time for its management team and “experienced third parties” to secure the best possible outcome for the bakery firm.

According to The Grocer, Roberts Bakery has been working with consulting firm PwC in recent months to explore ways to save the business.

The firm explained that its priority is to safeguard the jobs of its roughly 400 members of staff, preserve its brand and place the business on “more stable footing”.

The news comes less than six weeks after Roberts Bakery announced plans to close its site in Ilkeston. It still operates sites in Winsford and Northwich, although the Northwich facility did face a devastating fire in June 2023.

The cost of rebuilding the site, coupled with a loss of capacity and falling market share, have “made recovery extremely challenging”.

A spokesperson for Roberts Bakery commented: “Discussions are well advanced with third parties, and we are optimistic about a positive solution in the coming days that will preserve the whole company as a going concern.

“We are keeping all stakeholders informed including our employees. Day-to-day operations are unaffected, and the company is continuing to trade and fulfil orders as normal.”
