Plant-based food company THIS has launched two tofu SKUs made with chickpeas, instead of soy beans found in traditional tofu.

The new ‘THIS™ is Omami Chickpea Tofu’ range includes two pre-seasoned flavours, lightly seasoned and chilli spiced, and will be available to purchase from 24 September. Sold in 200g packs, the new SKUs retail at £2.95.

During the development of the range, THIS partnered with German food startup Omami in order to ensure that its chickpea tofu “delivers on all fronts”.

Made with more than 70% chickpeas, the medium-firm blocks are naturally low in saturated fat and high in protein, containing 14g to 15g per 100g.

THIS said that its chickpea tofu possesses a creamier texture, can be cooked straight out of the pack and crisps up once cooked.

Commenting on the launch, THIS chief executive Mark Cuddigan said: “This is going to be the best tofu on the market, game-changing taste and next-level texture. We’re obsessed at THIS™ with making plant-based food that tastes delicious and delivers on nutrition too.

“Our new chickpea based tofu does exactly that and will hopefully change the way people think about tofu. Plus, there’s also zero fuss - no marinating, no prep, no blandness. Just chop, cook, and enjoy.”

Meanwhile, Omami CEO Christina Hammerschmid said that the firm was delighted to have worked with THIS on the development of this new product.

“It’s a perfect match of two innovative companies that share the same vision – revolutionising the plant-based market by creating products that truly excite consumers with exceptional taste and nutrition," Hammerschmid added.

“We’re delighted that people in Britain will soon be cooking and enjoying omami’s deliciously marinated chickpea tofu.”

The news comes just over a week after THIS launched three new plant-based products.

70g packs of ‘THIS™ isn’t Beef Pastrami’, ‘THIS™ Is Super Veg Protein Bites’ and ‘THIS™ Is Super Superfood Breaded Pieces’ are available now for £2.95 in Morrisons stores across the UK.
