Leicester-based Jalpur Millers has announced the recall of several flour SKUs because they contain undeclared gluten.

The Indian food and ingredients specialist is recalling multiple pack sizes of its Farari Atta fasting flour, which contains gluten that is not mentioned on the label. The exact cereal which has contaminated the flour is currently unknown.

As a result, the product poses a possible health risk to anyone with an allergy or intolerance to gluten, or with coeliac disease.

Packs of Jalpur branded Farari Atta weighing 400g, 1kg, 5kg or 25kg with any date code are implicated in the recall.

Farari atta is used for making Indian flat breads like chapati, paratha and naan. Farari flour is also known as ‘fasting flour’ as it is used during religious fasting as an alternative to wheat based flour.

“If you have bought this product in the past six months and have a gluten allergy, please return to us and we will refund you the product costs,” Jalpur Millers said.

Meanwhile, the Food Standards Agency said that it has advised Jalpur Millers to contact the relevant allergy organisations, which will inform their members about the recall.

“The business has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers,” the Food Standards Agency added.

”These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.”

It also advised: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to gluten, or have coeliac disease, do not eat it.”

Jalpur Millers is a family-run business now in its third generation which sells a broad range of spices and flours to consumers in the UK, US, Canada, Portugal and elsewhere in Europe.

The business works closely with farmers across Asia, where it sources “only the best-quality raw materials available”.
