Roberts Bakery has proposed the closure of its manufacturing facility located in Ilkeston.

The Derbyshire site is focused on the production of speciality breads and morning goods, and employs 38 people whose jobs are now at risk.

Roberts Bakery described the move as a “difficult decision“, which followed a “comprehensive review of the company’s product portfolio, overall footprint and long-term business strategy”.

The bakery firm said that while the site in Ilkeston has made a significant contribution to the business over the years, the review process led management to the conclusion that the site is “no longer aligned” with its future plans.

A formal consultation period will begin shortly, with Roberts Bakery aiming to ensure that all those impacted by the closure will be supported with individual meetings and practical assistance to help them secure alternative employment opportunities within the local area.

In addition to the site in Ilkeston, Roberts Bakery operates sites in Winsford and Northwich.

Earlier this year the firm announced plans to cut 250 jobs at the Northwich site, a facility which experienced a devastating fire in June 2023.

Explaining the decision, Roberts Bakery said that sales volumes had been unable to recover to pre-fire levels, with many customers having secured alternative supply contracts during the recovery period.

As of September 2024, Roberts Bakery employed around 700 people across its three sites, but that number is expected to be closer to 400 as a result of these two moves.

In response to the announcement, Bakers Food and Allied Workers Union general secretary Sarah Woolley said the trade union was “deeply concerned”.

“The proposed closure of Roberts Bakery in Ilkeston puts our members’ livelihoods at risk,” Woolley told Food Manufacture.

“This decision is a devastating blow to loyal workers and the local community. We stand in full solidarity with our members and will be fighting to protect jobs, ensure fair treatment, and secure the best possible outcome for all those affected.”
