An Italian pasta topping product is being recalled because certain jars have been contaminated with Clostridium botulinum.

London-based firm La Sovrana, which specialises in Italian produce, is recalling a batch of Vittoria branded ‘Friarielli alla Napoletana’ because Clostridium botulinum, which can cause botulism, has been found in some of the jars.

Friarielli alla Napoletana is a bottled broccoli in oil product that is often used as a pasta topping. It is also referred to as ‘Friarielli in oil’.

Any 1KG jar of Vittoria branded Friarielli alla Napoletana with the batch code 280325 and best before date 23 March 2028 may have been contaminated and should not be consumed. The batch code and best before date can be found on the side of the jar next to the supplier information.

Clostridium botulinum is a toxin that can cause botulism, a serious form of food poisoning that can be fatal.

Symptoms caused by this organism include, feeling sick, vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhoea or constipation, drooping eyelids, blurred or double vision, facial muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, slurred speech and breathing difficulties.

Public Health Authorities advise that if you have consumed this product and have any concerns, you should seek urgent healthcare advice from healthcare professionals.

Point of sale notices will be displayed where the product is sold, explaining to customers why the products are being recalled. Anyone that has bought a jar from the batch in question should not consume its contents and instead return it to where it was purchased for a full refund.

“We are recalling [this product] due to recalls within the Italian food industry,” La Sovrana said.

La Sovrana is family-run business which has a farm in Italy from where its imports a range of produce to the UK.
