Unite the Union has been officially recognised as the trade union representative of the workers at a cold storage warehousing site in Peterborough.

Workers at the site, which is owned by global refrigerated warehousing firm Lineage, voted in favour of recognising Unite in a recent ballot, with discussions between the union and Lineage dating back to last September.

Recognition provides Unite with the legal framework to engage in collective bargaining on behalf of workers and enabling the union to negotiate improvements in areas including pay, job security, hours, equal opportunities and holiday entitlements, marking a significant step forward for staff rights and representation at Lineage.

Around 30 drivers and shunters will be covered by the recognition agreement, and three Unite workplace reps have been elected.

Lineage is one of the world’s largest warehousing and logistics company, operating more than 450 facilities across 18 countries in North America, Europe and the Asia Pacific region.

The firm partners with food and beverage companies from around the world, providing services such as cold storage, automated warehousing, freight forwarding and food manufacturing.

Commenting on the news, Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “This excellent news marks a significant milestone for our members at Lineage, which will help improve jobs, pay and conditions for workers.”

Meanwhile, Unite regional officer Rosie Newbigging described the ballot result as a fantastic workplace win.

“A lot of work has gone into this and as a result our members at Lineage have been rewarded with this fantastic workplace win,” Newbigging said.

“We look forward to Unite members at Lineage receiving the full benefits of union recognition and working with the company to achieve the best possible outcome for staff.”

Lineage declined to comment when approached by Food Manufacture.
