In early June, Organism announced it was recalling all batches of its Eggshell Membrane Capsules because a antibiotic-resistant strain of Salmonella had been found in the product.
The 500mg capsules are sold in packs of 60, and were initially on sale via Amazon and the Orgenism website.
However, Orgenism has since learned that they were also being sold on Ebay, with the updated warning urging anyone that has purchased the product via the ecommerce platform not to consume it.
The Salmonella found in the capsules has been linked to human illness after they have been consumed, with the Salmonella detected resistant to several antibiotics.
The strain of Salmonella identified produces extended-spectrum beta-lactamase, and is resistant to several antibiotics such as fluoroquinolones, tetracycline and Fosfomycin, making it more difficult to treat.
Anyone that has consumed the product has been told to contact their local health protection team for advice on whether or not they need to be tested and how to safely return the product.
Due to the nature of the Salmonella detected, particular disposal routes are required and anyone that has purchased the product has been asked to contact their local health protection team for advice on how to dispose of it.
The sale of the capsules on Ebay, Amazon and the Orgenism website have now stopped and investigations are ongoing. A point of sale notice with more information can also be found on the Orgenism website.
“If consumers identify this brand of eggshell membrane to be sold at any other retail points, including online sales, market stalls, retail stores or social media platforms, consumers should not purchase it,” the Food Standards Agency has warned.
In related news, Waitrose is recalling an egg product because certain batches may be contaminated with Salmonella.
Packs of the ‘Waitrose and Partners Egg and Spinach Protein Pot 90g’ with a use by date of 31 July 2025 or 1 August 2025 are impacted by the recall.
