Bakery firm Greggs has announced the appointment of Robert Moorhead as an independent non-executive director.

Moorhead, who was the chief financial officer and chief operating officer at WHSmith until retiring from the board in November 2024, will take up the role on the Greggs board on 1 October 2025. He will also serve as chair of the audit committee and join the nominations and remuneration committees.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that non-executive director and current chair of the audit committee, Kate Ferry, will retire from the board at the end of August.

Commenting on the appointment of Moorhead and Ferry’s departure, Greggs chair Matt Davies said: “Kate has played a key role on the Board of Greggs and I would like to take this moment to thank her for her exceptional contribution over the last six years.

“Whilst we are very sorry to see her go, we are delighted that Robert has accepted our invitation to join the Board. His financial expertise in a listed company environment, together with his significant experience in retail will be of great benefit to our business.”

The news comes as Greggs announced a 14.3% year-on-year decline in pre-tax profit during the first half of 2025. This is despite a 7% increase in sales, which rose from £960.6 million to more than £1 billion.

Alongside the financial update, Greggs said that work on its new frozen manufacturing and logistics campus in Derby and national distribution centre in Kettering was going as planned.

The logistics element at the Derby site is on track to go live during the first half of 2026, while the Kettering site should be operational by early 2027. The firm added that white space has been reserved at both sites for further logistics and manufacturing capacity development if required.

Finally, Greggs confirmed that it would be extending the availability of its frozen ‘Bake at Home’ range through a new relationship with Tesco from September. This will involve an initial launch of five products in more than 800 stores.
