According to sister title The Grocer, 70 staff at its head office in South West London are set to be laid off, while no customer-facing role will be impacted.
The Grocer has reported that the affected staff have been informed, with a consultation process set to conclude in October ahead of the changes being implemented in phases until February 2026.
In a statement shared with Food Manufacture, Lidl confirmed that jobs would be lost but did not offer much in the way of specifics.
“As a fast-growing business with strong momentum, we’ve undertaken a review of our operations to ensure we’re set up with the right foundations to support our ambitious expansion plans, now and in the future,” a Lidl spokesperson said.
“These plans include the opening of 40 new stores this year alone, creating over 1,000 new jobs for store colleagues, with further ambitions to accelerate that growth in the years ahead.
“As part of this review, we’ve put forward necessary proposals that will impact some roles within our head office. No customer-facing roles will be affected, and no decisions will be made until the consultation period has fully concluded.
“These proposals are designed to streamline our operations, improve efficiency and strengthen our business model. While these decisions have not been made lightly, we are committed to supporting affected colleagues and will offer alternative roles where suitable.”
The news comes shortly after Lidl GB chief customer officer Jassine Ouali announced that he is moving on to take up the same role with Lidl France.
Ouali is departing Lidl GB after nearly 18 months, during which time he served as chief operating officer and then chief customer officer.
