The drinks manufacturer is investing £4 million in the construction of a depot at the site, with the 222,000 square foot unit set to be completed in Q4 2026.
The West Midlands Interchange is a £2 billion new national logistics hub being developed by Oxford Properties and Logistics Capital Partners, located at Junction 12 of the M6 north of Wolverhampton.
It is just 10 miles from the current Carlsberg Britvic depot in Wolverhampton, which it will replace once built, with all the logistics operations managed from the current Wolverhampton site set to transfer fully to the new facility as part of a managed transition process.
The new depot is being purpose-built to Carlsberg Britvic’s requirements and is targeting a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standard. It will also be a Net Zero Carbon Aligned building based on the pilot UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard, while the roofs will be 100% optimised for solar panels.
“This investment underscores our long-term commitment to strengthening our operations and enhancing service to our customers,” commented Paul Davies, CEO of Carlsberg Britvic.
“The new facility will be a massive investment in the region, providing a new base for our depot team in Wolverhampton.
“The West Midlands Interchange provides an ideal location for our new depot, enabling us to future-proof our logistics infrastructure and build for sustainable growth.”
Meanwhile, James Markby, managing partner at Logistics Capital Partners, said that the agreement with Carlsberg Britvic was demonstrative of the “wider confidence” in the West Midlands Interchange project.
Carlsberg Britvic is the first firm to occupy the new logistics hub.
“The WMI site is set to become the country’s most significant rail served logistics development and will become a crucial component of the UK’s strategic freight network,” Markby added.
“It will be key to decarbonising UK logistics and supporting the country’s wider net zero aspirations.
“WMI will also make a significant contribution to the local economy, creating 8500 direct jobs and boosting opportunities for people in South Staffordshire, the Black Country, the West Midlands, and other surrounding areas.
“We look forward to announcing more occupiers in future months.”
The acquisition of Britvic by the Carlsberg Group was completed in January of this year for approximately £3.3 billion.
