Iceland is recalling a product because it may contain an undeclared allergen.

The discount retailer is recalling a single date code of ‘Daily Bakery 4 Sub Rolls’ because the batch contains barley, while this is not mentioned on the product label.

As a result, the product poses a potential risk to people that have an allergy or intolerance to barley (gluten).

Any pack with a 2 June 2025 best before date has been impacted and should not be consumed by people with a gluten allergy or intolerance.

Anyone that has purchased a pack from the batch in question should not consume it and instead return the product to any Iceland store for a full refund, with or without a receipt.

Iceland has contacted the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall, while point of sale notices will be displayed in all Iceland stores that sell the product.

“We are taking the precautionary measure of recalling the date code of the above product as it may contain undeclared Barley,” Iceland said.

“Only the best before date listed in this notice is affected.”

The notices will be displayed until 11 June.

In related news, Iceland dropped its commitment to stop selling eggs from caged hens by the end of 2025 earlier this month.

The retailer initially made the pledge in 2016 but recently removed a notice about cage-free commitment from its website.

“This is a phenomenally short-sighted move, and a deep betrayal of their customers and countless suffering animals,” said Claire Williams, campaigns manager at The Humane League UK.

“An overwhelming majority of the public thinks caging hens is wrong, but Iceland seemingly doesn’t care. Shoppers who want to avoid caged cruelty should shop somewhere else.”

Iceland has more than 900 stores in the UK, as well as a further 40 owned or franchised stores across Europe and a global export business.
