Fast food chain KFC has partnered with artisan ice cream maker Hackney Gelato to launch a limited-edition gravy flavoured gelato.

Sold exclusively though KFC’s online store, Gravy Gelato blends the taste of the fried chicken franchise’s signature condiment with ‘traditional Italian gelato craftsmanship’, with notes of peppercorn and chicken.

Blurring the line between dinner and dessert, the limited-edition gelato comes in 460ml tubs and will sell for £5.50 – a treat for KFC mega fans.

Gravy obsession

Commenting on the launch, KFC brand manager Phoebe Syms said: “With this collaboration, we’ve taken the nation’s gravy obsession to the next level…to give the people what they never knew they needed.”

Tom Lister, Hackney Gelato CEO, added: “We’re no strangers to pushing flavour boundaries, but gravy? This is a first for Hackney Gelato.

“When KFC asked if we could do this, it took some convincing of Enrico and our chefs, but as ever they stepped up and delivered – we can’t wait for fans to try this intriguing and savoury delight.”

Sales for Gravy Gelato go live at 1pm on 15 May and once it’s gone, it’s gone. All proceeds will go to the KFC Youth Foundation, empowering young people across the UK.

KFC’s bizarre adventures

KFC is well known for its novel advertising campaigns and marketing stunts to drive interest in its fried chicken.

From a video game that allowed the player to date brand mascot Colonel Sanders, to a bizarre series of adverts that conclude with a man being dunked into a river of gravy only to emerge as leg of fried chicken, weird and wonderful have been the flavour of KFC’s marketing stunts.

The brand’s catchphrase – ‘it’s finger lickin’ good’ – even inspired two ‘flavours’ of nail polish that the wearer could lick to experience the taste of original recipe and hot and spicy chicken.
