Two people have been taken to hospital after a fire at a Nestlé factory in Cumbria.

The Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service was called to the site at 7.10am on 14 April after a fire broke out on the fourth floor of a Nestlé building located off Carlisle Road in Dalston.

After the factory was evacuated the fire crew managed to extinguish the fire, with two people taken to hospital as a result of injuries sustained during the blaze.

More than 340 people are employed at the site which manufactures a wide array of Nescafé branded coffee products.

Commenting on the incident, a Nestlé spokesperson said: “Our factory at Dalston was evacuated this morning following a serious incident.

“Sadly, two of our employees have been injured and taken to hospital and they are our primary concern. Everybody else working at the factory is accounted for.

“The police and fire service attended earlier, the incident is under control, and there will now be a full investigation into the cause.”

Meanwhile, the Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service said in a statement: “Five fire engines and the joint incident command unit attended and our crews extinguished the fire using four breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets.

“Two casualties were taken to hospital by ambulance crews.”

The Dalston site has been operated by Nestlé since 1962, initially focused on the production of powdered and condensed milk before expanding its operations to include cappuccino mixes.
