Undeclared allergens sparked the recalls of baby potatoes, beer and chutney this week.

The Cotswold Brewing Company Ltd has recalled Hawkstone Black and Hawkstone Spa Lager because they contain undeclared wheat (gluten) which was not mentioned on the label.

This meant the products were a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten, or with coeliac disease.

The recall applied to 440 ml cans of Hawkstone Black and 330 ml cans of Hawkstone Spa Lager. All batch codes were included in the recall.

Jam, chutney and pesto

This week also saw Anglesey Foods Ltd recall various Jams, Chutneys and Pesto because barley (gluten) and/or sulphites were not mentioned on the label.

Sulphites and sulphur dioxide – along with gluten – are among the 14 major allergens that must be highlighted on back of pack ingredients lists for food sold in the UK.

Anglesey Foods has pulled Sundried Tomato Pesto (160g), Cowboy Chutney (174g), Mango Chilli Chutney (174g), Mild Chilli Jam (174g) and Hot Chilli Jam (174g) from sale. Best before dates for products range from 08 January 2025 to 20 December 2025.The food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued four allergy alerts for products containing gluten since the beginning of 2025, including McGees (Steak Burgers) and Unisnacks Europe Ltd (Orion Turtle Chips).

Potato recall

Meanwhile, Aldi has pulled Inspired Cuisine Baby Potatoes with Herbs and Butter from sale because it contained milk which was not mentioned on the label.

The presence of milk in the product made it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents.

Aldi’s recall applied to 385g packs of the product with the use by date of 12 April 2025.

The FSA has issued nine separate allergy alerts for recalls involved products containing undeclared milk since the start of 2025. January saw TJX Europe recall several confectionery products because milk was not mentioned on the ingredients list.

In other recall news, Tony’s Chocolonely is recalling two Easter egg SKUs because individual packs may contain metal.
