The food manufacturer did not confirm how many people have lost their jobs, but said that it was less than the 60 being reported elsewhere.
The firm also denied that redundant staff have been replaced by agency workers and said that the majority of people taking redundancy at the Crewe site had done so on a voluntary basis.
“Following a comprehensive review of the volume at our Crewe site, some redundancies have been made,” said a spokesperson for The Compleat Food Group.
“The review was required due to changing demand in a competitive trading environment and to ensure we can continue to support the long-term sustainable future of the site. We worked closely with all employees affected, including meeting on an individual basis to offer positions at other sites along with practical support.”
The news comes not long after The Compleat Food Group announced plans to lay off 131 members of staff from its facility in Nottingham, where a consultation process was launched in January.
Speaking at the time, a spokesperson for The Compleat Food Group said: “This is due to changing demand in a competitive trading environment and to ensure we can continue to support the long-term sustainable future of roles at the site.”
The facility in Crewe was previously the home to Wrights Food Group, a pie, prepared meals and desserts manufacturer that The Compleat Food Group acquired in 2021.
This was the firm’s first acquisition following its creation, which occurred as a result of the merger of Addo Food Group and Winterbotham Darby in January 2021.
In related news, the Crusty Cob has announced the closure of its nine bakeries across Devon and Somerset.
As a result, the more than 100 people employed by the bakery have lost their jobs, with the firm ceasing operations on 4 March.
