Asda has announced the appointment of Gavin Chappell as its new vice president of food and general merchandising supply.

Chappell previously worked for Asda in various vice president roles between September 2009 and March 2015, before moving onto senior roles with Dunelm, Holland & Barrett and most recently Bensons for Beds, where he has served as chief operating officer since August 2022.

In his new role, which Chappell is set to take up in April, he will be responsible for Asda’s food and general merchandising supply teams where he is expected to apply his experience in operations and supply chain roles.

He will report directly into chief supply chain officer David Lepley, who like Chappell returned to Asda following a stint elsewhere to fill this newly created role.

Commenting on the hire, Lepley said: “I’m delighted to welcome Gavin Chappell back to Asda after nearly 10 years.

“We know that the key to delivering legendary service and great value is ensuring customers can get the products they want each and every time they shop at Asda.

“Gavin’s knowledge of the business and considerable experience in logistics and supply chain functions will ensure we can continue meeting the needs of hardworking families.”

For the past five years Lepley served as group retailer director at Morrisons, having left Asda in 2016.

In other Asda news, the retailer announced earlier this month that it has completed a £2 million investment into its Pilsworth store in Greater Manchester.

Work on the 61,000 square foot store began earlier this year, with upgrades including a fresh modern look with new feature lighting and updated signage.

“After months of hard work from all involved, we’re excited to welcome the local community into our newly upgraded Pilsworth store,” said store general manager Dan Grindrod.

“This investment has enabled us to create a modern shopping environment that makes it easier for the customers we serve to find the products and value they’ve come to expect from Asda.”
