Grocery retailer Morrisons is bolstering its senior leadership team with three new hires and the promotion of two internal candidates.

This includes the hiring of former Lidl chief operating officer Matt Heslop, who had been set to join Asda in the same role until it was confirmed in January that he would not be taking up the position.

Instead, Heslop will join Morrisons as director of convenience and wholesale from March.

Elsewhere, Matt McLellan has been appointed to the newly created role of group data and media director, while Bruno Lebon has been named as a group trading director.

McLellan will join Morrisons later this year from Asda, where he was a vice president, and will take on responsibility for the design and launch of the retailer’s loyalty proposition.

All three new hires will report directly to CEO Rami Baitiéh.

As for the internal moves, Martin Dawson has been formally named as group retail director and a member of the executive committee after serving in the role on an interim basis since February last year, and Charlotte Exell has been promoted to the newly created role of online director.

Finally, chief customer and marketing officer Rachel Eyre returns from maternity leave on 3 March.

“I’m very pleased to welcome three outstanding retailers to the Morrisons leadership team and to warmly welcome Rachel back from her maternity leave,” said Baitiéh.

“All the new joiners have exceptional records in their fields and bring deep experience, a history of delivering growth and a clear customer focus. As Morrisons continues its re-invigoration and growth, their skills and their passion for the customer will make them a powerful addition to our team.

“Martin Dawson has made a significant impact in his new role over the last year and I am delighted to confirm him in the key role of Group Retail Director. And Charlotte Exell has played a vital part in the recent growth of our online business and I’m confident that under her leadership Morrisons.com will go from strength to strength.”

The news follows the January announcement by Morrisons that more than 200 employees working in a series of people management roles within employee engagement, recruitment and payroll were at risk of redundancy.
