The butcher, which is part of Karro Food Group, has confirmed that the burgers contain soya, sulphites and wheat (gluten), despite this being omitted on the product label.
This means that the burgers pose a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to soya, a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide or sulphites, or an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten or with coeliac disease.
The steak burgers are sold in 420g packs, with batch codes 040225 and 060225 involved in the recall. These batches feature best before dates of 14 February 2025 and 16 February 2024 respectively.
The burgers in question are only sold in Asda stores in Northern Ireland, where recall notices will be displayed explaining why the recall is taking place.
Asda and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) have also published warnings on their websites.
“If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to soya and/or a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide or sulphites and/or an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten and/or coeliac disease, do not eat it,” the FSA posted.
“Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.”
Asda added: “If you have purchased McGee’s Steak Burgers, please bring them back to your nearest store where you will be given a full refund. You do not need your receipt. We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused.”
McGee’s butcher delis can be found in Asda stores across the UK.
In other food safety news, the FSA reaffirmed a warning over dog chews from China that have been linked to ‘Werewolf Syndrome’.
According to reports from the EU, dogs that consumed the chews experienced symptoms including panic attacks, aggression, spasms, epileptic fits and in some cases death.
