Lidl opening four new stores
Discount retailer Lidl is set to open four brand new stores across Britain in the space of one month.
The stores are opening in Canning Town, Preston, Walsall and Wombourne, while the retailer is also re-opening expanded and upgraded stores in Blantyre, Cwmbran, Oldbrook, Wells, and West Ealing.
This follows the 10 store openings which took place in the lead up to Christmas, as well as the Northampton stores which opened in early January.
The investment in new stores will create hundreds of new jobs for people living in the surrounding area, with Lidl offering “industry-leading maternity and adoption leave, enhanced holiday entitlement and an in-store discount”.
Richard Taylor, chief development officer at Lidl GB, commented: “As we begin the new year, we’re maintaining our momentum and opening nine state-of-the-art stores, delivering bigger and better shopping experiences to new communities and those we’ve proudly served for an average of 26 years.
“After a record-breaking Christmas, where millions of households turned to Lidl, these openings reflect the growing demand for our unbeatable value and quality. This is just the start – we’ve got more openings in the pipeline this year alone and can’t wait to welcome even more customers, both loyal and new, through our doors in the weeks ahead.”
Lidl employs more than 34,000 people across its 970 stores and 14 distribution centres in England, Scotland and Wales.
Aldi raises £11m for charity
Aldi has raised £11m for the Teenage Cancer Trust since partnering with the charity in 2017.
Employees based across more than 1,050 stores, Aldi’s national head office and 11 regional distribution centres have participated in a variety of fundraising activities over the past eight years, from bake sales to marathons.
Meanwhile, Aldi customers have also played a vital role by donating at their local stores.
The money helps fund specialist nurses, youth workers and hospital units within the NHS that support 13 to 24-year-olds who have been diagnosed with cancer.
“Our colleagues continue to go above and beyond in their commitment to supporting Teenage Cancer Trust, just as they have done throughout our partnership,” said Liz Fox, national sustainability director at Aldi UK.
“Reaching this incredible milestone wouldn’t have been possible without their efforts and the remarkable generosity of our customers. Teenage Cancer Trust’s work is essential in providing life-changing support to young people affected by cancer, and we are proud to continue offering our support this year and beyond.”
