Discount retailer Aldi is set to create 1,600 new store roles in the UK this year.

The new opportunities will open up across its existing estate of 1,050 stores, as well as at new stores which are scheduled to open later on in 2025.

The retailer is recruiting new store managers, assistant store managers, deputy store managers, store assistants and cleaners.

The news comes in stark contrast to recent announcements from rival supermarket chains Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Tesco, which have all laid out plans to cut jobs.

Aldi is investing £650m in its UK operation this year, with nine stores set to open in London alone as part of a £55m investment in the capital.

Openings set to take place over the coming weeks include new stores in March in Cambridgeshire, Moston in Greater Manchester and Lytham in Lancashire.

Kelly Stokes, HR director at Aldi UK, said that retailer was on the lookout for “amazing people” to join the team.

“Our store colleagues are the best in the business and, as we continue to expand our store network and provide more customers with access to Aldi’s high-quality, affordable products, we’re going to need to grow those store teams with even more amazing people,” Stokes commented.

“We are committed to creating rewarding careers and offering market-leading pay for all our store colleagues. This year promises to be an exciting year as we bring even more Aldi stores to local communities across Britain.”

Aldi will also increase the pay of store assistants from March, with wages rising to at least £12.71 per hour. Meanwhile, store assistants employed at Aldi supermarkets located within the M25 will see hourly pay increase to £14.

Sainsbury’s announced a pay raise for its hourly paid employees in January, with staff at working in stores outside of London set to see their hourly pay increase from £12 to £12.45 in March, and then to £12.60 in August.

The hourly wage for Sainsbury’s staff in London will increase from £13.15 to £13.70 initially, before rising to £13.85.
