McCain Foods has acquired Neverlands-based frozen food firm Scelta Products for an undisclosed sum as it continues to expand in the frozen vegetable appetiser space.

The frozen potato producer, reportedly the largest in the world and operates sites in the UK, has been a business partner of Scelta for the past 13 years. Scelta Mushrooms, cofounder of Scelta Products, will solely focus on its mushroom business going forward.

Scelta’s plant assets will e integrated into McCain’s product network, creating increased capacity for the manufacturer to accelerate global prepared appetiser growth through European and international markets.

‘Natural compliment’

“With common customers and shared values as family-owned companies, there is a natural complement between McCain Foods and Scelta Products,” said Max Koeune, chief executive of McCain Foods.

“We feel honoured and privileged to build on the legacy of Scelta Products, bringing their delicious product to our customers as we expand on the fantastic business that Scelta’s founders have created.”

McCain’s acquisition of Scelta is the latest in a string of purchases in recent years by the frozen foods manufacturer in the appetisers and snacking space, including Ad van Geloven, Strong Roots and Forno De Minas.

Successful partnership

Jos Koster and Wilco Boone, co-founders of Scelta Products, added: “After more than a decade of building a successful business partnership, we are thrilled to officially become part of the McCain Foods family.

“Our companies have grown together over the years, and I'm excited to see that continue. In joining forces with McCain, a global leader in prepared appetizer products with similar business values to ours, I am confident that the legacy of Scelta Products’ will continue to be built upon.”

Meanwhile, Baker & Baker has signed an agreement to acquire Portuguese bakery Peipen, its first strategic acquisition since becoming a standalone bakery products manufacturer in April 2021.
