HelloFresh is the latest recipe box company to expand its operations as it has opens its third distribution centre at The Orchard, in Derby.

This opening following news that Gousto is to move to a £40m bespoke, chilled fulfilment centre at St. Modwen Park, Burton, Staffordshire.

The third new distribution site for HelloFresh is located at SmartParc SEGRO Derby and has created around 350 jobs for the local community in operation, distribution and management roles.

The Orchard is the size of one and a half football pitches (1,0962.5m2) and closely follows the opening of The Granary and The Beehive in 2016 and 2020.

Environment

HelloFresh said that by having the distribution centre in the Midlands it is able to reach more of the UK in fewer miles and means drivers have less of an impact on the environment.

The Orchard also features a sustainable water-cooling system and EV charging points for employees. The company said these features support its goal of reducing emissions in its distribution centres by 60% per euro revenue by the end of 2022. The building also features a 500kW photovoltaic system on its roof operated by SmartParc and able to deliver 430,000 kWh per annum which relates to 224,000 kgs CO2e.

SmartParc will utilise green energy from local wind turbines together with the roof top PV, delivering energy to the Orchard and the wider park.

Third facility in UK

Laurent Guillemain, UK ceo at HelloFresh said: “We are thrilled to have opened our third facility in the UK, and look forward to developing our presence in Derby and building lasting connections with the local community. It is great to be working alongside SmartParc, a company whose values and ethos align to those of HelloFresh, to pave the way for sustainable recipe box production.

“We look forward to delivering to more households across the UK, and can’t wait to be a part of changing the way that they eat, forever.”

Jackie Wild, Leo of Smart-Parc said: “The Smart-Parc team are very excited to be working in partnership with HelloFresh, with whom we have a shared ambition to support the local community through employment and charity initiatives and to see sustainable business operations. HelloFresh is our first anchor tenant in the new development, and we are pleased to welcome them to Derby and to continue developing our working relationship over the next few years.”

To further support the local community and reduce food waste, The Orchard site is partnering with local food banks, to share unsold but still edible food with those in need. HelloFresh said it would also be supporting other local charities through its donation programme.
