Online event to shine light on future of plant-based foods

Virtual event examines plant-based trends and challenges

Emerging trends in the meat-free market will come under the spotlight at the Future of Plant-Based Proteins: Roots of Further Growth virtual conference on 31 March.

The online event will feature key industry figures discussing significant international start-ups and product launches in the plant-based food sector.

A morning panel featuring Zak Weston, foodservice and supply chain manager for the Good Food Institute, and Edward Bergen, global food & drink analyst for Mintel, will highlight emerging foodservice and retail trends.

The panel will also discuss the potential for plant-based meat and offer essential insight for companies looking to carve out a niche in the face of intense competition.

Other scheduled panel discussions tackle plant-based production issues and the challenges of expanding from meat into veg, anticipating retailers’ requirements and how plant-based products can deliver nutritionally.

The event will also offer a processor’s perspective, with Ralph Langholz, head of alternative proteins at Micarna, outlining his company’s approach to plant-based production and its strategy for making the most of market opportunities.

Elsewhere on the agenda are in-depth sessions addressing current technical and operational challenges inherent in creating plant-based meat and dairy replacements and examining the functional and nutritional options open to processors targeting vegans.

A retail perspective on the plant-based market will be delivered by James Fisher, lead product developer, convenience meals, Marks & Spencer. He will be looking at the insights that retail customers can offer manufacturers, and how suppliers can work with customers to deliver mutual benefits.

Other speakers include Jo Baker Perrett, food scientist at Campden BRI and Judy Buttriss, director-general of the British Nutrition Foundation.
