In his inaugural speech, Stone called for renewed Government support for members supplying the foodservice and hospitality industry, warning many of their businesses face failure before recovery from the pandemic starts next year.
He commented: “I am particularly aware how challenging it must be for our members with exposure to the out of home market as they continue to bear the brunt of restrictions imposed by the Government.
‘Brings no hope’
“Unfortunately, the latest tier changes announced this week will not bring the hope that the out-of-home market has been looking for.”
Stine claimed the market was opening in name only, pointing to the swathes of pubs, restaurants and clubs that have gone out of business.
“We saw a positive impact from the ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ campaign in August, only for the position to go into sharp reverse in only a few weeks,” Stone added.
“Many of our members have had minimal support from the Government and the Federation will continue to highlight these issues to all appropriate stakeholder contacts. We simply must see further support for the out of home sector.”
Cutting food waste
He highlighted the growing awareness of frozen food’s role in helping to reduce food waste. In addition, he pointed to the work undertaken by several producers and retailers – such as Bird’s Eye, Cook and Poundland – to help bolster the image of frozen food in the UK.
Stone succeeds previous BFFF president and chairman Nigel Broadhurst, former Iceland Foods joint managing director. He praised Broadhurst’s contribution and added that the Federation would not be as strong today without his support.
In other appointment news, Ireland-based Kerry Group has announced the appointment of Thomas Hahlin Ahlinder to the role of president and chief executive officer, Taste & Nutrition, Europe.
