Prepared meals manufacturer Anglia Crown has added 11 products to its prepared meals portfolio for the care and healthcare markets, including its first mainstream wholegrain carbohydrate dishes.

The company, whose headquarters is at Colchester in Essex, claimed the products supported public health advice from the Government’s Eatwell Guide (2016).

It highlighted that figures from The National Diet and Nutrition Survey (2018) revealed that no age group of UK consumer was currently meeting their recommended intake of fibre. In addition, many consumers didn’t know how much fibre they should be eating or where to find it.

The latest additions to Anglia Crown’s Crown Advantage and Crown Choice ranges are expected to debut at the Hospital Caterers Association (HCA) forum on 2 and 3 April in Liverpool.

Three of the 11 new dishes are available in the individual frozen Crown Advantage range. They feature Beef in Black Bean Sauce with a blend of white and wholegrain rice, Chicken Arrabiata fusilli with wholemeal pasta, and a Soya Mince wholemeal Pasta Bolognese. The meals complement Anglia Crown’s reduced sugar wholemeal sponge desserts.

Of the remaining eight dishes, which are all available in the company’s multiportion frozen and chilled Crown Choice range, six can be served with two new wholegrain rice accompaniments. These include a Steak and Mushroom Stroganoff, Pork in Smoked Paprika Sauce, and Soya Mince Chilli.

Anglia Crown said it was introducing its hottest meal yet in that range in the form of a sweet and spicy chicken in chipotle sauce. Also new to the range are two wholegrain rice sides along with one improved recipe – taking the firm’s Crown Advantage Chicken Korma dish into its Crown Choice range.

Vegan meals

The business said it expected the spicier dishes to be popular with adolescents and adults. The Soya Mince Pasta Bolognese, Soya Mince Chilli, and Wholegrain Rice side dishes were all vegan options and were registered with the Vegan Society to complement the vegan meals Anglia Crown already supplies, it added.

The new dishes have been developed by Anglia Crown’s team of food technologists with guidance from the company’s dietitian.

“We are confident these products will be a big hit with the healthcare and care markets,” said Mary Wedge, business development manager at Anglia Crown.

The company works with 100 hospital sites, employs 160 people and makes 40,000 chilled and frozen ready-meals a day.

The business was sold by Bakkavor Group in 2018 in a management buyout to managing director Paul Howell and Andrew Lone, who was previously head of finance and operations.
