A worker tragically died in an accident at Müller’s Market Drayton site on Tuesday (14 January).

The West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to the factory at 3.05pm, but were unable to do anything to save the man, who was confirmed dead at the scene.

A spokesman for the manufacturer said: “Following a serious incident at our facility in Market Drayton, Shropshire, which sadly resulted in a fatality, a full internal investigation has commenced.

“The incident involved a contractor who was carrying out maintenance on a service lift. We are providing our full support and co-operation to the Health and Safety Executive and other agencies.

Müller offered its thoughts and sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased.

Working with the police

A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said: “HSE are aware and are supporting West Mercia Police. We cannot comment any further at this stage.”

Deaths within the manufacturing industry, including food and drink manufacturing, increased during the 2018/19 period, according to statistics from HSE – 21 on average from 2014–2018, 26 from 2018 to 2019.

The manufacturing sector and the transportation and storage sector have a rate of fatal injury around 1.5 to two times the average rate across all industries. Falls from height accounted for 40 of the 147 workplace fatal injuries reported last year.

Meanwhile, last month, police confirmed the death of a worker at a food packaging and cake decorations manufacturer in Burnley. The incident occurred when a worker became trapped in machinery at Doric FPD at around 10.30pm on 3 December.
