Food Manufacture’s Food Safety Briefing will cover emerging allergen issues in the wake of Natasha’s Law coming into force earlier this month, alongside a range of other essential topics.

Food Safety Briefing: 2020 and beyond: a new era for food standards, chaired by chief executive of Campden BRI Steven Walker and sponsored by RSSL, will take place online on 15 October at 3pm.

Barbara Hirst, consultant, food safety & quality at RSSL, will look at the challenges posed by allergens in the food chain, with reference to cross-contamination and the challenges of this for plant-based and free-from food production.

Other speakers confirmed include Dr Derek Watson from the University of Sunderland, addressing the subject ‘Being watched: fostering a food safety culture and managing audits’. The topic is particularly pertinent in view of the recent launch in the food chain of audits based on BRC version 8, which stresses the creation of a food safety work culture.

Dr Roy Betts, head of microbiology at Campden BRI, who will focus on how emerging science is addressing the threat posed by pathogens in production facilities. Dr Betts’ presentation will consider developments in rapid in-line testing, whole genome sequencing and how to deal with biofilms at plant level.

Food safety policing, allergen management

Other areas covered will be: the shifting legal landscape with regard to food safety in the UK and its implications for processors, plus food fraud.

Together with the six presentations, the webinar will feature two separate Q&A sessions to give attendees the chance to air their own views and quiz speakers.

Exclusive survey

The webinar, which is free to attend, will also exclusively reveal the results of Food Manufacture’s annual food safety survey of food and drink manufacturers across the UK.

The research will provide a unique and independent overview of food standards and key challenges at the factory level, with feedback from the people closest to the action: food safety, technical and quality managers and senior staff.

If you work in this area and have not yet had time to complete the survey, which can easily be done in 10 minutes, click the link and have your say. One lucky participant, chosen at random, will receive a £100 Amazon voucher.
