Fire crews quelled a fire at Addo Food Group's Market Drayton-based Palethorpes Bakery unit at Maer Lane on the evening of 17 May.

According to Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service Fire Control (SFRSFC), three appliances were mobilised from Hodnet and Market Drayton and tackled the blaze, which it classified as a kitchen fire.

The conflagration was located in a conveyor oven, which SFRSFC described as "well alight on arrival of fire service". Four pieces of breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets were used to deal with the incident.

Firefighters attended the scene for two hours to bring the blaze under control.

Palethorpes Bakery produces own-label chilled savoury rolls, savoury hot pies, pasties and slices for top supermarkets and employs 700 staff. It was founded in 1852 and was sold by owner Northern Foods in 2007 to private equity business Vision Capital, alongside Northern Foods' Pork Farms and Bowyers brands.

A year ago, Palethorpes Bakery opened a £1.3m distribution centre at its Market Drayton site, creating 100 jobs.
