Meat-free food brand Hooba Foods has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise £250,000 via Crowdcube.

The aim of the campaign is to aid company growth and secure supermarket shelf space for its vegan products nationwide.

Capital raised will go towards increasing Hooba’s presence in the UK through a large-scale marketing and communications campaign, as well as implementing a national growth strategy for markets across the UK and Europe.

Aimed at vegans, vegetarians or simply those looking to cut down on their meat consumption, Hooba’s products are made entirely from a blend of exotic mushrooms that look and taste just like meat.

According to Hooba, animal agriculture consumes one-third of all the planet’s fresh water, 45% of the Earth’s land is used for farm animal grazing and 91% of rainforest destruction is due to clearance for grazing land and growing crops for animal feed. It believes that reducing the amount of meat that is consumed is not only good for consumers but good for the planet too.

John Shepherd, co-founder of Hooba Foods, said: “The meat-free food industry is going from strength to strength in the UK and recent stats show that 44% of people in the UK have expressed an interest in eating less meat, without becoming vegetarian. By supporting our Crowdcube campaign you can help spread the Hooba message and help to look after our planet and our nation’s health.

“Hooba is not just about great taste. We’re on a mission to help reduce global meat production and, at the same time, improve the health of the nation by producing tasty food, without the meat. With the world’s population increasing and concerns over environmentally sound and sustainable sources of protein, Hooba provides a great and ecologically friendly alternative to meat which still has the great taste and texture.”

Currently Hooba Foods’ campaign has raised £570 with 18 days left to go.
