Chalmers Bakery wants to extend delivery times at its Ballater facility
Scottish bakery firm Chalmers has applied for a change in approved delivery times in an effort to save the business from closure.

Under current restrictions in Aberdeen City, the business can only dispatch products from its Ballatar site after 6.30am however due to the nature of the bakery industry and customer requirements, it has written to the local council asking that they be allowed to dispatch from 4am Monday to Friday and from 3am on Saturdays.

The bakery was forced to transfer all production to its Ballater site following the closure of its Bucksburn facility due to a downturn in business. While this did lead to the creation of 10 extra jobs at the site, the delivery restrictions have caused problems for the bakery.

In a letter to Aberdeenshire Council, director Pamela Chalmers said that the future of the business might hinge on these changes.

“We do hope we are successful in our application as it would be of great detriment to our business if we are not.

“If the application was not successful we unfortunately would not be able to fulfil our orders as required, resulting in a major loss of business and jobs.”

“Chalmers Bakery as a whole has been in business for 63 years in Aberdeen/Shire with the same original family managing the company today and in a struggling industry we really hope to continue for many years more to come.”
