Meat processor 2 Sisters Food Group has joined an elite group of organisations in the world in an effort to tackle food waste.

The business has become a ‘Friend of Champions 12.3’, a group of executives chaired by Tesco CEO Dave Lewis, tasked with the target of halving food waste by 2030.

The ‘Friend of Champions 12.3’ network is a group of organisations recognised for supporting the movement and making efforts toward reaching this target.

Ranjit Singh, president of Boparan Holdings, said: “We believe there is a global responsibility to ensure that food suitable for human consumption is kept within the supply chain. With 8.4m people in the UK struggling to put enough food on the table, it is not acceptable that food is going to waste.

“At 2 Sisters we recognise there is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to tackling this issue and we’ll therefore continue to look at a number of different initiatives across our operations to find opportunities for positive change.”

2 Sisters has already helped contribute towards the reduction of food waste through its partnership with the food redistribution charity FareShare.

What is Champions 12.3?

Champions 12.3 is a coalition of executives from governments, businesses, international organisations, research institutions and civil society dedicated to accelerating progress toward achieving SDG Target 12.3 – one of the Sustainable Development Goals created from the 2015 United Nations General Assembly. Those involved include: 2 Sisters Food Group, Aldi, Cranswick, Kerry Foods and Pizza Hut.
