The new contact will see the Northern Irish manufacturer supply ‘Extra Special Light & Lean’ sausages to 350 stores across the UK.
The deal is a continuation of Finnebrogue’s partnership with the retailer first forged in 2014, which saw the manufacturer provide Asda’s entire premium Extra Special sausage range.
Asda senior buying manager for meat Paul Geary said: “The Extra Special sausage range supplied by Finnebrogue has been an outstanding success since the contract was first announced at Balmoral in 2014.
‘Partnership continues to flourish’
“We’re delighted that our partnership continues to flourish and that we are marking the third anniversary by extending the range to include this premium, healthy option – which reflects the ever-changing needs of our customers.”
The addition of ‘Light & Lean’ to the 16-strong Extra Special range coincided with the start of the summer season when sausage sales traditionally spike. Asda forecasted it would sell about 7M packs of premium own-label sausages over the summer months.
Finnebrogue’s new product development manager for Asda Sarah Savage said: “We are proud to be one of Northern Ireland’s leading artisan food producers and have built our relationship with Asda thanks to our innovative approach, dedication to new product development and consistent quality.”
‘Leading artisan food producers’
Finnebrogue has been operating from its Downpatrick site since 2002. The site produces a range of venison and sausage products that are available in supermarkets nationwide, including Waitrose, Marks & Spencer and Asda.
It was one of 27 food and drink producers that was identified in this year’s London Stock Exchange list of 1,000 Companies to inspire Britain.
The report identifies the fastest-growing and most “dynamic” small and medium businesses across the UK, with companies growing at 70% per year – up from 50% last year.
Meanwhile, last month meat processor Doherty & Gray signed a £350,000 contract with Tesco Northern Ireland to supply own-label burgers.
