Turmeric’s popularity continues to grow after a blending and packing firm reported a 10% increase in sales of the spice over the past year.

Demand has risen as consumers are starting to realise that turmeric can be beneficial to health in more ways than one, according to EHL.

The yellow spice is “absolutely bursting with antioxidants, has anti-inflammatory properties and is very low in sodium and cholesterol”, said EHL md Tasneem Backhouse.

‘Growing desire to live healthier’

“People’s growing desire to live healthier, holistic lifestyles has caused sales of turmeric to soar. Its therapeutic properties have led to it becoming our best-selling spice,” she said.

“Interest and sales are also coming from independent cafés and bistros because its use in lattes has grown dramatically over recent months.”

Turmeric is a perennial herbaceous plant of the ginger family and has long been popular in traditional Asian medicine as well as in cookery.

EHL sells herbs, spices, dried fruit, seeds and nuts.
