ABP Food Group has appointed Finbarr McDonnell as chief operating officer, effective from April this year, filling the role vacated by Frank Stephenson, who was named group chief executive in October 2016.

McDonnell  is currently managing director of ABP's Ireland and Poland businesses. The company announced today (26 January) that he would now take on a wider group role across all of ABP's four divisions: beef, proteins, renewables and pet food.

ABP also revealed that Martin Kane would assume McDonnell's current post as soon as he changes roles. Kane has been with ABP for 21 years in various finance roles. For the past 10 years he was finance director for ABP Ireland and Poland, working closely with management teams on all aspects of the business, including the acquisition of a number of sites.

ABP Food Group is one of Europe's leading privately owned agribusiness companies. It is the largest beef processor in Ireland and the UK and operates substantial renewable, pet food and protein divisions.

The company employs 10,000 people and has 41 manufacturing plants in Ireland, the UK, Denmark, Poland, Austria, the Netherlands, France and Spain. Its beef division is a major exporter of Irish beef.

ABP Food Group is a founding member of Origin Green. Last October the European Commission approved the company's joint venture with Linden Food Group for the Slaney Meats/Irish Country Meats business.
