A number of “potentially unsafe” frozen fish and chicken products were recalled over the weekend, after they had been repackaged in unapproved premises.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) issued a Food Alert for Action on all products of animal origin packed and supplied by MDA Products. All date and batch codes were affected.

The products had been repackaged in unapproved premises and were the subject of a number of labelling and traceability contraventions, said the FSA.

These included best before dates and use by dates extended beyond those set by the manufacturer, making them a risk to consumers who could consume them, said FSS

Risk to consumers

Some of the known products affected by the recall included: Lytham Fish Co basa fillets, Tasty Chicken Co chicken fillets in tomato and herb marinade and Lytham Fish Co 16 seafood sticks. See a list of the identified products in the box below.

The FSA and FSS said in a statement: “Despite investigations by the enforcement authorities, it has not been possible to obtain the full distribution details or product traceability record for these products.”

The frozen products were distributed to three retail chains in Scotland: Frozen Vlaue, Factory Foods and Home Bargains.

“It is possible that a number of products may have been sold through other distribution channels in addition to the retail chains mentioned above,” added FSS.

Latest in a number of recalls

The FSS and FSA alert on MDA’s fish and chicken was the latest in a number of recalls of products that had been repackaged or had their use by dates extended.

Marks & Spencer’s sage and onion stuffing with a use-by date of December 29 2014 and pork and roasted red onion stuffing with a use by date of December 26 2014 were among a number of products recalled from butchery chain Nicholls Meats on December 22 2016.

Also included in the recall were Asda’s Extra Special Pork, Mulled Cranberry and Orange Stuffing, as well as several branded and non-branded Nicholls Meats products.

Retailer Spar was also forced to recall its egg and mayonnaise sandwich filler, after it was found the use by date on the packaging had been extended from January 2 to January 17.
