Almost 50 jobs could be lost at Addo Food Group’s Spalding Bakery, after the pastry manufacturer proposed to restructure its shift system.

Addo Food Group – which is known for its Wall’s and Pork Farms brands – entered a consultation process with staff last week, the company confirmed. Talks began after Addo decided to streamline production and improve efficiency by altering shift patterns, it claimed.

Forty-six jobs could be lost

The manufacturer stressed that nothing had been decided yet, but 46 jobs could be lost if the proposed shift changes go ahead. Addo said it would work closely with its staff to minimise job losses.

A Spalding Bakery spokeswoman told FoodManufacture.co.uk: “We have announced that we are entering into a consultation process with employees at our Spalding Bakery site. We are proposing to restructure the current shift system in order to streamline our processes and identify essential efficiencies. Regrettably, there is still the potential that 46 jobs could be lost.

‘Every opportunity to minimise potential job losses’

“We fully recognise how hard this proposal is on affected employees and, should it be progressed, we will work closely with our employees and their representatives to look for every opportunity to minimise potential job losses.”

Spalding Bakery was opened 35 years ago, and produces a range of pastries including sausage rolls, shortcrust and puff pastry. It recently started manufacturing snacks including pizza pockets and mini burgers.

Meanwhile, Spalding Bakery employs around 500 workers. The Nottingham-based firm was formerly known as Pork Farms, but was rebranded in 2015, after it acquired Kerry Foods chilled savoury pastry business.
