Border Biscuits doubles output with automated flowrapping line

Border Biscuits has doubled production for one of the main sectors it serves, following the installation of new packaging line at its Lanarkshire site.

The bakery, which produces more than 300,000 packets of biscuits a week, bought Ulma’s row distribution system to meet demand for its mixed variety products.

The packaging line includes two Atlanta Hi-tech flowrappers with Dakota infeed units, where products are sorted, one on top of the other, to achieve twin-packs at speeds of up to 150 a minute.

After packaging, packs are automatically conveyed into cardboard containers for storage and distribution using twin-case opening and loading systems, which count the correct amount of packs required for each case.

This automated system replaces Border Biscuits’ semi-manual packaging loading operation, doubling the output of its own-label products destined for foodservice customers.

“This was the largest and most complex project we had ever undertaken,” says Border Biscuits’ chief operating officer Dee Scott.
