Danish pork producer Tican moves production to UK
By closing its Ansager facility, 80 employees could potentially lose their job.
"We have to protect our market share in the UK group and by doing this, we will increase our competitiveness in the UK market," Tican's chief executive, Ove Thejls told GlobalMeatNews.
"Over the last few years we have lost ground to our competitors, which are mainly UK processors, plus German and other Danish processors."
Tulip, Cranswick and Karro Food Group were identified by Thejls as being the company's main competitors in the UK.
It is expected that Tican's production for the UK market will eventually relocate to Becketts Foods in Coventry and Direct Table Foods in Little Saxham, Bury St Edmunds, after initially moving to Germany.
Whilst a few employees will be repositioned, it is thought that the majority will be let go by the time production transfers on 1 October 2016. An estimated 25 workers from the bacon facility at Ansager will feel the impact, with a further 55 in the pork-deboning plant at Thisted being affected.
Theijls previously said in a statement: "It is obviously regrettable that this decision in the short term leads to the loss of jobs in Denmark, but we keep working hard with plans for growth and investments in other areas, which in time is expected to lead to a positive development in employment."
