To meet today’s materials handling challenges, including demand for bespoke conveyors and increased speed of operation, UPM Conveyors has invested £50,000 in a 3D computer-aided design (CAD) system to assist it in optimising equipment layout.

A greater variety of applications for conveyors and the need for increased speed have been the real drivers of change, says UPM. In addition, programmable logic controllers now manage systems that may incorporate product separation, centralising, orientation and merging or metal detection and weighing equipment.

To help meet these challenges, UPM has purchased Autodesk’s Inventor 3D software, which is used for creating digital prototypes using design visualisation and simulation of products.

It will help customers to see systems for handling applications in advance of their manufacture. Images can be rotated through 360°, removing the risk of the new system not interfacing with existing equipment.
