Three Mexican business leaders have created a multi-million pound venture, MexImport Group, which will source traditional food and drink from their homeland.

MexImport Group ceo Katya Torres de la Rocha has previously developed Mexican food online shopping websites mexgrocer.co.uk and MexImport.co.uk.

The businesswoman has now teamed up with Francisco Yong Garcia, former md of flat bread company Mission Foods Europe, and Eduardo Gomez Resendiz, founder of agave spirits festival Tequila and Mezcal Fest.

The three co-founders have joined forces to source and supply Mexican food and drink to retailers, pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes in the UK and other parts of Europe.

‘Many years of experience’

At the MexImport Group launch this month, Torres de la Rocha said they share “many years of experience” in working with Mexican producers and UK consumers.

“Our coming together to establish MexImport Group is a natural progression for each of us,” she said. “This is an exciting moment for the Mexican food industry.”

The British public has a growing appetite for Mexican food and it was ranked as the nation’s favourite foreign cuisine in a survey by research organisation Future Thinking this year.

MexImport Group aims to cater for this increasing demand by buying directly from producers and promoting reputable brands to the retail, food service and hospitality industries.

‘Support Mexican agriculture’

Yong Garcia said: “This new business – which is far greater than the sum of its parts – will support Mexican agriculture and by extension the Mexican economy.

“In the UK, we’ll be bringing lovers of our cuisine new gastronomic experiences through exciting brands, including a huge range of free-from products.”

Gomez Resendiz added: “This is a fantastic next step for the Tequila and Mezcal Fest and an exciting development for producers of Mexican produce, food, drink and brands.”
