Irish bacon producer M&M Walshe Holdings has increased its UK presence with the acquisition of Worcestershire-based Stirchley Bacon.

M&M Walshe currently operates Callan Bacon and RibWorld.

The newly enlarged group has a combined turnover of approximately €120m and employs almost 500 staff. M&M Walshe plans to further strengthen the Stirchley offering and capacity with investment and knowledge-sharing.

Family-owned Stirchley Bacon Co was founded in 1982 and operates from a 20,000sq ft state-of-the-art purpose-built unit in Redditch, Worcestershire, producing 140 tonnes of slices weekly.

Paul Walshe, sales and marketing director at M&M Walshe Group, said:

"Bringing a successful brand like Stirchley Bacon on board is an exciting venture for us. The M&M Walshe Group is committed to continuing investment in equipment, innovation and people; we have moved from simply being a processor of pork and bacon to being an expert manufacturer."

The acquisition is part of the company's growth in new European markets which Walshe said was focusing on sous vide.

"Our European growth is targeted mainly on our sous vide business as European markets continue to fall in love with this type of product experience. We have established roots in most of the main European markets for both retail and foodservice."
