Four wafer products have been recalled on fears they may have become contaminated with salmonella
Fears about salmonella have sparked three more food safety recalls of wafer products, after Tesco recalled its free-from Belgium chocolate wafers last week.

The three products recalled on Friday (August 21) were: Kelkin Milk Chocolate Wafers ‘free-from’ Gluten, Bakers Delight ‘free-from’ Enjoy Gluten Free Wafer Fingers and Atkins Endulge Chocolate Break Wafers.

Valeo Foods recalled packs of its Kelkin Milk Chocolate Break Wafers ‘free-from’ Gluten with a ‘Best before’ date of February 1 2016.

Precautionary basis

The manufacturer said it had withdrawn the products on a precautionary basis. The recall concerned  a batch sold only in Sainsbury’s UK stores.

Sainsbury has displayed point-of-sale recall notices in stores, advising customers what actions to take if they have bought the product. No other Kelkin products are known to be affected.

Bakers Delight’s recall of its ‘free-from’ Enjoy Gluten Free Wafer Fingers affected all ‘best before’ dates.

The manufacturer said it had recalled all packs on a precautionary basis. The product is sold exclusively through Waitrose stores in the UK. Waitrose has displayed point-of-sale recall notices in its stores.

No other Bakers Delight products are known to be affected by this recall.

The recall of Atkins Endulge Chocolate Break Wafers affected products with a ‘best before’ date of August 27 2016, with a batch number of 5147 and a pack size of three wafers x 21.5g.

Tesco’s UK stores

The potentially affected batch is sold only by Tesco’s UK stores. No other Atkins International products were known to be affected by the recall.

On Wednesday (August 19) Tesco warned its free-from Belgium chocolate wafers might be contaminated with salmonella. The retail giant said in a statement: “Whilst we have no confirmed reports that Tesco products have been contaminated, as a precautionary measure, we are recalling the product.”

FoodManufacture.co.uk has asked the Food Standards Agency if a single supplier produced ingredients used in all four recalled products.

Meanwhile, how to prevent a costly food or drink product recall will be one of the subjects under the spotlight at the Food Manufacture Group’s one-day food safety conference at the Lowry in Manchester on Tuesday September 29.

Full conference programme and booking details are available here.
