The Society of Food Hygiene and Technology (SOFHT) has appointed Asda’s operations compliance manager Alan Lacey as its new chairman.

Lacey, who has been a member of SOFHT for 19 years and vice chair for the past two years, takes over from Catherine Watkinson.

Watkinson, who is group technical director at egg manufacturer Stonegate, had been chair of SOFHT since 2012.

Lacey said he was “extremely proud” to take over as chairman of the society during its 35th anniversary year.

“The food industry is hugely important to the UK – we export 20% of the food we produce – and we will continue to support our members with technical and legal advice so that they can optimise their businesses and deal with problems that are bound to arise as markets get more demanding and the industry becomes more complex,” he added.

Food safety conference

Lacey is among the speakers at the Food Manufacture Group’s food safety conference.

The one-day food safety conference ‘Safe and legal food in a changing world' will look at emerging food safety issues and the changing regulatory environment.

The day will be divided into four sessions: Tomorrow's food safety risks; Managing the supply chain; Keeping food safe; and Novel processes and packaging.

It will take place on October 15 at the Heritage Motor Centre in Gaydon, Warwickshire.
