High-street baker Greggs has appointed Peter McPhillips and Sandra Turner as independent non-executive directors.

Turner, who will take up her role at Greggs’s annual general meeting on May 1, will bring over 21 years’ experience to the role – gained as a member of the senior leadership team at Tesco.

She is also a previous director of Northern Foods, having left the business in 2011.

She will be appointed as senior independent director and chair of the remuneration committee, as well as joining the audit and nominations committee.

McPhillips

McPhillips, who has taken up the role immediately, has spent most of his career in food manufacturing in management positions at Uniq, Terranova and Hillsdown Holdings.

Most recently, he was European chairman of the Hain Celestial Group. He is also non-executive director of frozen food firm Browns Food Group. He will sit on the audit, remuneration and nominations committees at Greggs.

The pair will replace Iain Ferguson and Julie Baddeley on the board, who will leave the business at the close of the annual general meeting.

Ian Durant, chairman of Greggs, said he was “delighted” to welcome both Turner and McPhillips to the board.

“McPhillips brings a wealth of food manufacturing experience which will be invaluable as Greggs seeks to strengthen its competitive advantage through its integrated supply chain,” he added. “Turner’s extensive experience of consumer-focused businesses will complement and complete a board line up with diverse and highly relevant backgrounds.”
