High-temperature film cooks the bird in the bag

Retailer launches whole roast chicken in a bag

Asda has introduced a range of prepared ready to be roasted whole chicken in a bag.

Part of the premium Butcher’s Choice range, the chickens make use of new ovenable printed packaging supplied by FFP.

FFP worked with chicken processor Faccenda, which Asda had challenged to come up with an innovative packed product.

The new packaging, part of FFP’s Estercook high-temperature packaging project, was produced in conjunction with DuPont Teijin Films and allows people to cook a whole chicken from scratch without having to handle the raw bird.

The pack is pierced once, placed in the oven and left to cook in one of seven complementary flavoured coatings, from spicy piri-piri to traditional sage and onion. The pack forms a chamber around the bird, keeping the inside of the oven clean and allowing the moisture and flavourings from the chicken to surround and permeate the flesh. The chicken skin will brown within the pack, and customers can open the pack before the end of cooking if they want a crispy finish.
