Dry blend lactose boost to infant formula producers

Ingredients firm boosts output for infant formula manufacturers

Last month Arla Foods Ingredients launched a lactose for dry blends, designed to enable infant formula manufacturers to increase output without compromising safety or requiring major capital investment.

At present, lactose is usually supplied and used in wet blends that also contain the other key ingredients in infant formula, such as proteins, fats, skim milk powder, vitamins and minerals. These wet blends are heat-treated and spray dried ready for packaging.

Arla Foods Ingredients’ new dry blend lactose can be introduced after heat treatment and drying, when it can be combined with the spray-dried wet blend ingredients and packaged. This leaves more space for the other ingredients during the wet blend stage, so capacity can be increased by up to 25% on existing production lines.

Luis Cubel, sales director for Arla Foods Ingredients’ Permeate & Lactose Business, says: “Our dry blend lactose means infant formula firms can increase output and cut costs without compromising safety.”
