Bakery firm GH Sheldon Family Bakers has invested £730,000 into the business in order to meet growing demand for its range of products, creating 40 jobs in the past year.

The money will be invested to continue the growth of the Manchester-based company by increasing its bread roll making capacity by 30% and increasing efficiency across its hot cross bun production.

Sarah Sheldon, director of Sheldon Family Bakers, said the investment represented a “step change” in the business.

‘Need to invest’

“We’re passionate about baking and extremely proud of what we’ve achieved so far, but in order to develop and grow our reputation for great quality muffins, rolls and morning goods we recognise the need to invest in our buildings, infrastructure and people,” she said.

Sheldon added that during the summer demand for the family-run firm’s products had reached levels previously unknown to the company over 50 years of producing baked goods.

“Due to the fantastic weather this summer combined with increased range distribution with our current customers, orders were at levels we had never previously experienced,” she added. “As a result we recognised that capacity was becoming a challenge and accordingly are investing £730k in our production facility.”

40 new staff

Over the last 12 months the company said it had employed 40 new staff members. This included the strengthening of its quality control team with a new quality and continuous product improvement manager – as well as the appointment of a new human resources manager last month.

“This investment in people, processes and infrastructure will see us on our way to achieving our aim of becoming one of the leading morning goods and rolls bakeries in the country,” Sheldon added.

GH Sheldon Family Bakers’ range of muffins, baps, tea cakes, rolls and buns are currently available in Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury, Tesco, Co-operative Food Group stores and Aldi.

Meanwhile, earlier this year neighbouring bakery firm Allied Bakeries completed work on its £30M investment into its production facilities in Stockport.

Allied Bakeries also started work on its largest bread plant, with a capacity of 10,000 loaves an hour, in Walthamstow and development work at its bakery in West Bromwich this year.
