Winners of this year’s Meat Training Council (MTC) awards received their prizes from Her Royal Highness, Princess Royal at a packed event held last Tuesday [February 26] at the historic Butchers’ Hall in London.

The ceremony saw youngsters in their first year in the industry rewarded for their achievement in learning, alongside seasoned professionals receiving fellowships from the Institute of Meat for lifetime contribution to the meat industry.

“It is wonderful to see so many fresh-faced young people – the future of our industry – standing shoulder to shoulder with our most experienced professionals, particularly in such an historic venue,” said MTC chairman Bill Jermey.

True pride

“Evidence, if evidence is needed, that there is real life in the meat industry and true pride in the specialist skills and knowledge which we collectively hold.”

The prizes awarded* included: Best Student in the Food Industry; Best Meat Apprentice; Best Training Company Scheme and Outstanding Meat Learner of the Year. There were also several Master Butcher awards presented to highly skilled individuals. The recipients were John Mettrick, Andrew Rook and Alex Rowan.

Meanwhile food and drink awarding organisation FDQ, a subsidiary of the MTC – which specialises in developing qualifications for the sector – has just received accreditation from qualifications regulator Ofqual for a food-specific management qualification for food manufacturers.

Morrisons

FDQ works with retailers such as Morrisons and manufacturers such as Britvic, Greencore and Moy Park, amongst others. Some of the largest manufacturers in the sector have learners ready to sign up to the new qualification, according to FDQ.

FDQ’s portfolio includes qualifications designed for the food supply chain workforce, as well as those developed for learners studying in colleges and universities. They range from short one-day courses, through to one- or two-year courses and a selection of work-based learning programmes.

Whether staff work in admin, warehousing, retail, transport or cleaning roles, there are qualifications to meet their needs and the needs of business.
