Time is running out to register for the free food science and technology webinar ‘Food fact and fiction, separating science from myth’ before its transmission tomorrow (January 24) at 11.00 GMT.

The free, one-hour webinar aims to move the debate about food science and technology onto a more secure scientific footing.

Organised by FoodManufacture.co.uk and the Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST), the webinar will identify problems and opportunities in the perception and reporting of controversial topics − such as genetic modification, nanotechnology and irradiation – and suggest ways in which science can hold more sway – within a context of consumer acceptability.

Taking part will be the Food Standards Agency’s chief scientist, Dr Andrew Wadge, chief policy advisor of food safety watchdog Which? Sue Davies and Leatherhead Food Research’s principal consumer analyst Nicole Patterson.

Live Q&A session

Each will deliver a 10 minute presentation before answering delegates’ questions in a live Q&A session.

  • Wadge will explain how regulatory frameworks can help to introduce clarity in the debate about controversial food technologies such as irradiation, nanotechnology and genetic modification.
  • Davies will place the debate in the framework of consumer acceptability.
  • Patterson will reveal recent research that uncovers consumers’ perceptions about the communication and application of nanotechnology and GM topics.

The webinar is aimed at anyone in the industry who welcomes a debate based on science and technology rather than mere prejudice. It will also be particularly useful to food sector communicators, food science and technology policy makers, and government science policy makers.
