Chocolate manufacturer Mars has disowned the iconic northern delicacy the deep-fried Mars bar.

The firm is insisting that the home of the deep-fried dish – the Carron Fish Bar in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire – publishes a disclaimer at the end of its menu to distance the manufacturer from the product.

Flagship product

A spokeswoman for Mars told FoodManufacture.co.uk: “We are really flattered that customers ofCarron Fish Bar like our product so much that it has now become a flagship product for the store.”

But, she added: “Deep-frying one of our products goes against our commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles.”

A spokesman for the fish bar – which claims to have invented deep-fried Mars bars 20 years ago – told this publication: “We are happy to put the disclaimer on our menu.

"They’re really popular with our customers. We sell up to 150 every week.”
